Finding the Right Web Designer in Edinburgh, Scotland
Web design companies come in all shapes and sizes. Here’s how to find the best web designer for YOUR project.
What Can a Web Designer Do For Your Business?
If you’ve been DIYing your website but it’s no longer cutting it for your business (or you don’t know where to start with getting your online presence up and running), then you need a web designer.
A professional web designer doesn’t just make your website look pretty. They’ll work with you to ensure your website:
Benefits of Hiring a Professional Web Designer in Edinburgh
Edinburgh has a large volume of small businesses – in fact, it’s the highest in the country according to the Federation of Small Businesses – and this means lots of competition to be found and seen online by your target audience.
Hiring a professional web designer in Edinburgh gives you the opportunity to make your website stand out and work hard for your business. Build it well and it will be your hardest working employee, ready to wow visitors, answer questions and take orders – even when you’re sleeping.
If you hire someone who knows the local market, understands your specific needs, and has knowledge of the latest technology and digital trends, then you’ll be well on your way to building an effective website that attracts your ideal audience AND converts them from visitors to customers.

How to Find the Right Web Design Company For Your Project
Finding the right web designer for your project can be daunting. You want someone who understands your vision, has the skills to make it happen, and is within your budget. But you also want someone who’s easy to work with, communicates well, and appreciates the needs and quirks of your business.
Web design companies are not a one-size-fits-all business. You’ll find they range from freelancers who specialise in a few areas, to small studios with a few staff, to large agencies who can handle all of your digital needs.
The type of provider you need depends on many factors, including communication style, timeline and cost. If you’re just starting out then a full-service agency is unlikely to be within your budget. Additionally, if you’re a one-person outfit then you may prefer the closer working relationship you’ll get with a small web design company or freelancer.
When you’re hiring a web designer check out their portfolio, previous experience, areas of expertise and communication skills. It’s important you find the right fit as you’re going to working closely with them on a project that’s vital for your business.
When looking at web designer portfolios, think about the following factors:

How I Work With My Edinburgh-based Web Design Clients
I’ve lived in Edinburgh most of my life so I’m very familiar with businesses across the city, and the digital / marketing challenges they face.
My web design process works the same way regardless of location. I follow a content-first design process, which means the content of your website dictates design and not the other way around. (You won’t get as good a result if you try to shoehorn your content into a design that wasn’t built for it – and you’d be much better off buying a pre-made template if you’d prefer to do it that way.)
The website design will depend on your content, ideal client, target market, and the goals your website needs to achieve. We’ll usually work on wireframes first (these are layouts without design elements), then move onto desktop design followed by mobile/tablet.

WordPress Website Design in Edinburgh
WordPress remains the gold standard website platform for small to medium business owners (or any business owners – if it’s good enough for Sony and Disney…) and so it’s my platform of choice. I don’t work with Squarespace or Wix because they won’t grow with your business (and because I like to be able to say “yes” to any client requests).
I specialise in creating custom WordPress websites that are fast, secure, tailored to your needs and bring your brand to life.
Whether you’re looking for a brochure website, appointment booking system, e-commerce site, membership area, or anything else – WordPress can achieve it and you won’t be tied into one proprietary platform and all the limitations that come with that.

How Much Does Web Design in Edinburgh Cost?
Short answer: it depends on the scope of the project. (I know, I know – terrible answer but bear with me).
Long answer: most web design projects consist of bespoke work with any number of variables, such as the level and complexity of custom design, required features, number of pages, volume and type of content, integrations with other platforms, hosting needs, etc.
The web design and development partner you choose is probably the biggest factor in cost. A large, full-service agency will obviously charge substantially more than a freelance designer/developer.
The simplest answer is this: the average spend for businesses on a professionally-built website will vary from anything from a few hundred to many thousands of pounds.
I work with lots of different businesses and I know that budgets come in all shapes and sizes. I’m happy to chat to you about what can be done for your budget.
